Swiss managers are going on more business trips

Business travelers went on more trips again last year. Despite the more difficult economic environment, Swiss companies bought around a fifth more flight tickets than in the previous year, according to an analysis published on Tuesday by corporate payment expert AirPlus.
However, the pre-coronavirus pandemic level has not yet been reached, AirPlus writes in a press release. Spending on airline tickets has reached 88% of the 2019 level. However, this figure puts Switzerland well above the European average of 76%.
According to the study, fares have barely changed: A Business Class ticket cost an average of CHF 4388 in 2023 compared to CHF 4372 in 2022. In Economy Class, the average price rose by just one franc to CHF 607. Compared to 2019, prices in Business Class rose by around 10 percent and in Economy Class by as much as 18 percent.
Germany and the USA as top destinations
In Europe, Germany was the most popular destination for business travelers, as in the previous year and also in 2019, followed by the UK and Spain. In terms of intercontinental destinations, the USA defended its top position ahead of the United Arab Emirates. In third place is China, which has pushed India into fourth place.
"Flight capacities to Asia are steadily increasing and it can be assumed that the continent, and China in particular, will return to pre-corona levels in terms of business travel this year," Andy Stehrenberger, Managing Director of AirPlus in Switzerland, is quoted as saying in the press release. At the same time, the USA remains in high demand as a travel destination.
The Lufthansa subsidiary AirPlus is a provider of business travel management solutions. For its analysis of the development of business travel in Switzerland, the company relies on data on around half a million airline tickets sold to Swiss companies.
