More apartments are to be built in Switzerland, especially affordable ones. This is the aim of an action plan discussed by representatives of the federal government, cantons and municipalities together with affected associations and presented in Bern on Tuesday.

The population is growing, as is the amount of living space required per capita. And less is being built: While 53,000 new apartments came onto the market in 2018, 43,000 were expected for 2023. According to the action plan, the number of permits for new builds fell by over thirty percent between 2016 and 2023.

This should ensure more affordable living space. Topics include densification and better utilization of building land, more efficient planning and approval procedures and fewer abusive objections as well as the strengthening of indirect housing subsidies - insofar as the federal government's tight finances allow. Thanks to this, sufficient affordable and needs-based living space should be created.
