The designated SVP party leader Marcel Dettling has praised the benefits of global warming in an interview. Global warming is not a bad thing for farmers, said the 43-year-old National Councillor and farmer from Oberiberg SZ.
"I'd rather it got warmer than colder," the politician from Switzerland's largest political party told the NZZ am Sonntag newspaper. Suddenly, new, high-yielding plant species would be waiting in our latitudes. The vegetation period would also be extended.
On the negative effects of warming, such as longer dry periods in summer or extreme weather events with floods in the fall, Dettling said: "We have to accept this and invest the money where it makes sense. We can breed new varieties that are more resistant to drought. We can expand the water catchments and much more."
According to the SVP politician, measures to reduce greenhouse gases "hardly achieve anything". "It is much more important that we adapt. Humanity has been doing this for thousands of years." A discussion about good or bad is useless. "We can't stop climate change." The climate has changed again and again over the centuries.
"Will not trim the SVP to a Yes course"
He is bothered by the fact that people are being ripped off with climate measures, Dettling continued. "You make electricity and fuel more expensive and have the feeling that you are changing the climate. That's charlatanry."
Dettling continues to oppose the new Electricity Act, which will be put to the vote on June 9 - and thus against his party colleague Albert Rösti in the Federal Council, who is responsible for the dossier. "I will not steer the SVP towards a Yes course."
Dettling criticizes the fact that environmental associations are not adhering to agreements and have already lodged objections to the first water project at the Trift Glacier. The energy decree is intended to expand both hydropower plants and alternative energies. An alliance of environmentalists and wind power opponents launched a referendum.
The SVP will adopt its slogan on March 23. Dettling is also to be elected party leader at the delegates' meeting. He is the only candidate to succeed outgoing party president Marco Chiesa.
