The President of the Swiss Young Socialists (Juso), Nicola Siegrist, will be stepping down next June. The 27-year-old made the announcement on Sunday at the end of the two-day annual meeting of the Young Party in Bümpliz BE.
The Zurich cantonal councillor and student has been on the executive board of Juso Switzerland for five years, three of them as vice president and one and a half years as president. After a long, exciting and intensive period, the time has come to make way for the next generation, Siegrist was quoted as saying in a press release. Siegrist's successor will be determined by the Juso delegates on June 29.
On Saturday and Sunday in Bümpliz, around 150 delegates adopted a position paper on justice and security, among other things. Instead of protecting the property of the richest and repression, the focus of justice should be on finding solutions together and reconciliation, according to the paper.
In connection with the forthcoming second anniversary of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the Young Socialists once again called for the freezing and expropriation of the Russian oligarchs' billions. This money should be used for the reconstruction of Ukraine. In addition, the European Central Bank should take over Ukraine's debt payments.
The Juso also reaffirmed its support for the 13th AHV pension, which will be put to the vote on March 3. With regard to the future of the pension system, the Juso proposes strengthening the AHV by abolishing the other two pillars.
