At the opening of the "National Conference Health 2030" on Tuesday, Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider emphasized the importance of the digitalization of the healthcare system. This is a top priority for the Minister of Health.
Digitalization could strengthen the healthcare system, the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) announced on Tuesday. This is because there is a backlog in the digitalization of the healthcare system. It could facilitate collaboration and improve treatment quality, efficiency, transparency, patient safety and research.
According to the press release, representatives of the federal government provided information at the conference about Digisanté, the program for digital transformation in the healthcare sector adopted by the Federal Council in November 2023.
Processes not coordinated
The numerous IT systems and processes in Switzerland are not sufficiently coordinated and data cannot be transferred seamlessly from one system to another, the FOPH wrote. This means that information has to be entered multiple times, the same examinations and tests have to be carried out several times and information cannot be reused. To make the most important health information more easily accessible digitally, the various systems need to be better networked.
The electronic patient dossier (EPD) is already available in Switzerland. With the EPR, all important health information can be clearly stored in one place and accessed easily and securely at any time. According to the FOPH, this benefits patients, their relatives and healthcare professionals.
In her speech at the opening of the conference, Baume-Schneider also emphasized the importance of strong and financially sustainable primary care and called for close cooperation between all partners involved. Over 320 representatives from the healthcare sector took part in the conference.
