On Record Store Day (RSD), independent record stores all over the world celebrate with special limited edition LPs. It is now clear what will be released: for example, The Rolling Stones with the recording "Live at Racket, NYC" or a glow-in-the-dark EP by John Lennon or an alternative version of a classic by Neil Young & Crazy Horse.

The Rolling Stones presented their celebrated new album "Hackney Diamonds" with an exclusive gig in New York on October 19 last year. The Stones performed seven tracks on that day in the fall of 2023 to promote their album comeback, including four new songs (including "Sweet Sounds of Heaven" with Lady Gaga), which have already been released on a special bonus CD edition of "Hackney Diamonds". Now the tracks are being pressed on vinyl together with three old hits for the RSD.

Neil Young has re-recorded the original grunge album "Ragged Glory" live with his newly formed backing band Crazy Horse in a club in Toronto. The songs on the RSD vinyl, now titled "Fu##in Up", have been given new names, the track list follows the original.

The executors of David Bowie's estate remain busy, and "Waiting in the Sky" is released for RSD. The LP follows the song selection originally planned for "Ziggy Stardust" but then revised. Motörhead also got creative: For "Remorse? No!", the studio songs from the compilation "No Remorse", which summarized the band's first ten years, were replaced by live and demo versions.

Extensive list

Pearl Jam are treating their fans to the new LP "Dark Matter" in colored vinyl, Kiss fans can look forward to a picture disc of Ace Frehely's new solo work "10,000 Volts" and posthumous releases by the late drummer Eric Carr. For fans of cultivated rock music, there is "Hammersmith 15/11/1967" by Thin Lizzy, a recording of a complete show - previously only part of a box set.

This year, an "Ultimate Edition" of John Lennon's "Mind Games" will be released in various formats. As a teaser, there are two "Mind Games" EPs with four songs for the RSD - one on black, audiophile vinyl and one as "glow in the dark".

The entire list of releases - ranging from Lilly Allen to the Grateful Dead, Willie Nelson, Black Sabbath, the Buena Vista Social Club and Queen to the Sex Pistols - can be viewed online on the "Record Store Day Germany" website.

The RSD has existed since 2007, originally as an initiative of independent record stores in the USA and thousands of other stores worldwide. Around 30 stores from all parts of Switzerland are involved. These physical record stores are dedicated to selling music; they are owned by independent retailers - "and not online retailers or corporate giants", according to the website. The RSD 2024 is on April 20.
