Employees at the Micarna meat processing facility in Ecublens VD took a stand by striking on Thursday, opposing the proposed shutdown of their workplace.

The strike follows a refusal from management to engage in discussions, despite workers’ early morning plea for negotiations. Unia, representing the workers, emphasizes the need for immediate dialogue to reconsider the closure decision.

The strike decision came after a unanimous vote at a worker’s meeting, signaling strong opposition to the management’s stance. Unia’s press release highlighted the workers’ demand for management to abandon their rigid position and commence crucial talks.

This move comes after Micarna, a Migros subsidiary, announced its intention to close the Ecublens facility by spring 2025, affecting 84 employees. This decision is part of Migros Group’s strategy to centralize meat processing activities, primarily at its Courtepin FR headquarters.

Currently, Micarna operates across 23 locations in Switzerland, employing over 3,000 individuals.
