The online services Facebook and Instagram experienced disruptions worldwide on Tuesday. The US parent company Meta announced that users around the world have had difficulties accessing Facebook, Instagram and Threads since 16:30 CET. Switzerland was also affected. Around two hours later, Meta announced the end of the disruption.
The Downdetector portal, where users can report malfunctions, recorded up to 580,000 reports for Facebook and up to 92,000 for Instagram. Threads, which was launched in 2023 as a rival service to X (formerly Twitter), was apparently also affected. The Whatsapp service, which also belongs to Meta, did not appear to have any problems.
Numerous users reported that their Facebook login failed when they entered their user data. On Instagram, the homepage no longer refreshed. It was also noticeable that the number of outages reported on Downdetector fell noticeably from 17:30 CET.
With three billion active monthly users, Facebook is the largest online network in the world. According to the latest figures, Instagram has around 1.35 billion users.
