Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider commented on the state of equality in Switzerland in a video on X on the occasion of International Women's Day on Friday. On average, women earn 1,500 francs less per month, Baume-Schneider said in the video.

According to the head of the Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA), women are also less likely to be bosses and more likely to take on unpaid work. Their old-age pensions are lower and the risk of poverty higher. They also experience domestic violence or sexual harassment much more often.

So we can't rest on our laurels, Baume-Schneider continued. "A lot still needs to be done to ensure that women can lead a secure life and are financially independent."

This is despite the fact that there have been some positive developments - such as the increasing participation of women in the labor market and the growing involvement of women in politics.
