Internet addresses with .swiss domain freely available from the end of April

People who are Swiss nationals or resident in Switzerland have been able to purchase the .swiss domain name since Wednesday. Internet addresses with the .swiss domain were previously reserved for public or private companies and organizations.
In addition to private individuals, sole proprietorships without an entry in the commercial register, such as architects or craftspeople, can now also apply for registration. This was announced by the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) in March.
In order to meet the requirements for a .swiss domain name, the official name of the applicant must contain an official surname or another surname registered with the civil registry office. Swiss nationals living abroad may only use their domain name ending in .swiss for private or charitable purposes, according to the statement.
The .swiss domain name was launched back in 2016, but was not freely available for purchase. The Federal Council decided to open up the domain on June 2, 2023. The revised Ordinance on Internet Domains (OID) came into force at the beginning of this year.
