Avalanche in Graubünden claims two lives

Two touring skiers have been fatally injured in an avalanche accident near Klosters GR. They were swept down around 200 meters by avalanches. This means that 14 people have died in avalanche accidents this winter season.
The two victims are a 54-year-old man and his 57-year-old companion, both of whom live in the canton of Bern, the cantonal police of Graubünden reported on Saturday.
The two winter sports enthusiasts were on their way from the Silvrettahütte in the direction of Klosters on Friday afternoon. In the Schintersiten area, they were skiing down a slope with a steep gradient, as the police describe the course of the accident. Several avalanches broke loose there and swept the two winter sports enthusiasts some 200 meters down into the valley over rocky terrain. Both were fatally injured. The Graubünden public prosecutor's office has started an investigation into the avalanche accident together with the cantonal police.
A total of 143 avalanche accidents have occurred this winter half-year since October last year, according to statistics from the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research. A total of 190 people have been caught in the masses of snow. 14 of them were fatal.
