The canton of Zurich plans to invest CHF 1.5 million in women's football projects. The aim is to give girls' and women's football a boost in the run-up to Euro 2025.

For example, the Zurich Football Association received money for the junior women's section, as the President of the Government and Minister of Sport Mario Fehr (non-party) told the media in Zurich-Höngg on Wednesday.

The canton of Zurich is spending a total of 3.5 million. In response to a question from a journalist, Fehr said that he did not consider the contribution of four million francs that the federal government had made for the European Championships to be sufficient. "That does not do justice to the event".

The Letzigrund in Zurich will host five matches of the Women's European Championship, including a quarter-final and a semi-final. Fehr said he was pleased that for once football would be possible without major security costs. He expects "a four-week festival for the population". There will be supporting activities and events.

Sandra Plaza from the Sports Office of the Canton of Zurich is coordinating this football festival. Much of the event will take place close to the clubs, such as watching football together. There are unlikely to be any large public viewings. Advertising for the Women's European Championship will already be taking place during the men's European Championship in June, for example at the start on June 14 at the public viewing in Winterthur.

Two million to the city of Zurich

Other cantonal measures include coach training and youth camps. From May, clubs or schools can also submit applications for money from a funding pot to organize tournaments or football get-togethers for girls. Around 100,000 francs are available for this purpose, said Martina Kropf, Head of Sports Promotion at the cantonal sports office.

Two million of the CHF 3.5 million from the canton's charitable fund to support the European Championships will go to the City of Zurich. The city is also responsible for any "fan mile".
