The Jura separatist movement Mouvement autonomiste jurassien (Maj) wants to celebrate its 77th birthday with a public festival at the end of June and at the same time mark the 50th anniversary of the canton of Jura. It wants to appeal to young people in particular, as Maj announced on Thursday.
The Maj is keen to reach out to the younger generation, who did not live through the political struggles of the founding era. In addition to film screenings, reports from contemporary witnesses, tributes and an appearance by 93-year-old poet and activist Alexandre Voisard (93) at the festival, plaques tracing the history of the Jura will be set up in the old town of Delsberg.
The budget for the three-day event, which will take place from June 21 to 23 in Delsberg, amounts to around 170,000 Swiss francs, according to the Maj, which will be financed almost entirely by private supporters and local income.
What makes the event special is that it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the referendum of June 23, 1974, which led to the creation of the new canton of Jura on January 1, 1979. It also coincides with the year in which the transfer of Moutier to the canton of Jura was officially finalized. This transfer marked the end of the Jura question at an institutional level.
