Switzerland pledges significant financial support at the international donor conference in Paris.
At the international donor conference in Paris, Switzerland provided CHF 19 million in aid for the humanitarian consequences of the conflict in Sudan.
Exactly one year after the outbreak of war in Sudan, the 60 or so countries attending the conference appealed to the parties to the conflict to ensure safe and unhindered humanitarian access throughout the country.
In addition to financial aid, Switzerland is also working to promote peace, protect the civilian population, improve the humanitarian situation and find a political solution to the conflict, the statement continued.
According to the FDFA, the support package from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) includes financial contributions and the deployment of experts from the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit.
Since the beginning of the war, Switzerland has provided CHF 83 million in humanitarian aid, of which one third has been spent on Sudan and two thirds on neighbouring countries.
In Sudan, the Sudanese army and the militias of the Rapid Support Forces are fighting each other, which has drastically worsened the security and humanitarian situation of the population.
Over 8.6 million people have been displaced, including four million children. Two million people fled to neighbouring countries, particularly Chad, South Sudan and Egypt.
According to UN figures, 18 million people are currently suffering from acute hunger. Of the 49 million people in Sudan, 25 million need humanitarian aid this year.
