57,000 signatures against new healthcare funding collected

The Swiss electorate is expected to vote on the reform of healthcare financing this year. The Swiss Association of Public Service Employees (VPOD) submitted 57,000 referendum signatures to the Federal Chancellery in Bern on Thursday.
This concerns the so-called monism proposal, which provides for uniform financing of outpatient and inpatient care (Efas). The cantons should now pay at least 26.9% of the costs of services and health insurers a maximum of 73.1% through premiums.
Today, outpatient treatment is paid for by the health insurance companies alone, out of premium money. At least 55 percent of inpatient services are covered by the cantons. The rest is paid by the health insurance funds.
Opponents of the fundamental restructuring of healthcare financing fear that the health insurance companies could become too powerful. The danger is a further increase in premiums. Proponents, on the other hand, expect the reform to offer considerable savings potential.
