The car-free popular sports event Slow-Up will take place across Switzerland on 18 different days and locations in 2024. It starts in Ticino on Sunday: the route runs between Locarno and Bellinzona along Lake Maggiore to Tenero and through the Magadino plain.
The approximately 50-kilometre route will be closed to motorized traffic. Festivities, entertainment and refreshments will be organized along the route, according to the Slow-Up website.
On the northern side of the Alps, the Slow-Up season starts a week later: the Slow-Up Murtensee will take place on April 18. On 30 June, the 300th Slow-Up Jura will take place, as the organizers announced in advance.
Other Slow-Up days will be held in Schwyz, the Broye district of the canton of Fribourg, Lake Constance, Lake Zurich, Valais, the Hochrhein and Werdenberg-Liechtenstein regions and Schaffhausen-Hegau. Two further days will be held in France.
For non-motorized traffic and sustainable tourism
Slow-Up is a car-free popular sports event and has been held since 2000. The Slow-Up days are free of charge for all cyclists, inline skaters and walkers. With a few exceptions, the routes are flat, and longer routes can also be shortened so that they can also be completed by families and people with disabilities.
According to the organizers, the Slow-Up Days are intended to promote slow traffic, nature-based and gentle tourism as well as health. Inclusion has also been a part of the event since the beginning and is reflected in the routes and festival sites that are accessible to everyone. Up to 500,000 people take part in the Slow-Up Days every year, according to the organizers' website.
