In future, the federal government should be able to set volume discounts for medicines with a large market volume. In this way, the responsible Council of States committee wants to curb healthcare costs. The small chamber will now decide on a corresponding package.

Last fall, the National Council was the first chamber to adopt new measures to curb cost growth. The Social and Health Committee of the Council of States (SGK-S) has now adopted the package of measures and approved them in the overall vote by 10 votes to 1 with one abstention, as reported by the parliamentary services on Wednesday.

The most important addition proposed by the committee, with 3 abstentions and no votes against, is the introduction of volume discounts for medicines with a large market volume in the form of so-called cost succession models. According to the press release, this measure is aimed at a small number of established products which, however, account for a significant proportion of medication costs. According to estimates by the administration, this could save up to CHF 400 million.
