26 up-and-coming artists from eleven countries will be presented at the Basel Young Stage circus festival, which will take place in the Arena at the Basel Exhibition Center from 2 to 6 May. The companies enter the competition and hope to get involved.
The circus plays with the boundaries between individual artistic disciplines: US-American Quinton Lopez's performance develops from dance into contortionist contortions and finally flows into powerful acrobatics on a suspended pole.
Nadja Hauser, founder and director of the event, said that the young talent festival is looking for exceptional performances that build a bridge from tradition to nouveau cirque. The insight into the rehearsal work of Young Stage on Tuesday underlined this well.
Young Stage has established itself as an international festival since the first edition in 2007. The number of applications bears witness to this: 465 applications from 57 countries were received, said Hauser. 26 of these artists from eleven countries were accepted. None of them are from Switzerland this year.
Participants from Ukraine and Russia
One of the special features of the line-up is that, in addition to two performances from Ukraine, a Russian artist will also be taking part. However, the diabolo juggler will be performing under a white flag, says Hauser.
The festival sees itself as a competition for young talent, a platform for further training and a casting event for young artists. This means that not only circus fans will be in the audience for the six performances, but also agents and bookers.
The competition jury includes representatives from renowned organizers such as the Cirque du Soleil from Montreal and the Monte Carlo Circus Festival. In addition, a children's jury awards the Young Stars prize, as Hauser said.
