After a record year in 2023, the Swiss hotel industry is also doing well this year. Significantly more guests stayed overnight in local hotels in March.
The total number of overnight stays rose by 3.9% to 3.3 million in March compared to the same month last year, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Monday. The number of overnight stays had already increased by 2.2% and 3.8% respectively in the two previous months.
More international guests
Guests from abroad were the main driving force behind the increase. They were responsible for 1.6 million overnight stays in March, which corresponds to an increase of 6.6 percent. The most important group of guests came from Germany, followed by the USA and the United Kingdom.
There was also an increase in the number of Swiss guests in March. This was 1.5 percent more than in the previous year. With 1.7 million overnight stays, they continued to make up the majority of all guests.
Overall, the Swiss hotel industry was thus able to seamlessly build on the previous year's record number of guests. With 41.8 million overnight stays, the 40 million mark was exceeded for the first time in 2023. With almost 10 million guests (+3.3%) in the first quarter, the industry is also on course for a record in 2024.
