Dead in a fire in a studio apartment in Biel

A 73-year-old man died in a fire in a studio apartment in Biel/Bienne BE on Friday morning. The professional fire department rescued the unconscious man from the apartment building. Despite immediate rescue measures, he died on the spot.
The alarm was raised shortly after 5 a.m., according to the Bern cantonal police. The professional fire department was able to quickly extinguish the fire in the apartment of the six-storey building. Apart from the deceased, all residents left the building independently and were unharmed.
The studio apartment was badly damaged by the fire, but the other apartments are still habitable. The cause of the fire was unknown in the afternoon. The public prosecutor's office has launched an investigation.
