The sparrow is the most widespread bird species in Switzerland's urban areas. This was the result of the national bird census "Hour of the Garden Birds" conducted by the nature conservation association Birdlife, in which over 142,000 birds were reported.
The sparrow - also known as the house sparrow - was spotted in 82 percent of all areas, as Birdlife reported on Wednesday. A total of 27,093 sparrows were counted. In second place was the crow (11,800) and in third place the swift (11,588).
The number of birds sighted per garden remained more or less constant compared to previous years, the report continued. There was a decrease in the number of greenfinches and house martins. These species were previously sighted more frequently. Furthermore, birds such as the gray flycatcher and the common redstart have disappeared almost everywhere on the Central Plateau.
Settlement areas important for birds
According to Birdlife, near-natural gardens provide a habitat for more bird species than gardens with uniform lawns and exotic plants. Up to five more species have been counted in near-natural gardens in recent years. Settlements have become an important habitat for birds. There are now more birds in settlements than in cleared agricultural landscapes.
The "Garden Bird Hour" count was carried out in Switzerland for the tenth time in a row this year. Between May 8 and 12, over 7,200 people, families and school classes went in search of birds.
