At the 8th Brussels Conference, Switzerland reaffirmed its support for Syria and the region with CHF 60 million. The Syrian population continues to suffer from the civil war that has been raging since 2011. With this support, Switzerland is continuing its long-standing commitment.
The money will flow into multilateral and bilateral projects as well as projects and expert missions carried out in Switzerland, as announced by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) after the conference on Monday. The conference is being organized by the EU.
According to the FDFA, the number of Syrians dependent on humanitarian aid has risen from 11 million in 2020 to 16.7 million in 2024. More than 7.2 million people are internally displaced. A series of devastating earthquakes further exacerbated the situation in February 2023.
The neighboring countries of Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey have taken in over 5 million Syrian refugees. According to the FDFA, they are therefore also dependent on support. The most pressing problems are the supply of food and water, as well as the lack of educational opportunities, healthcare, accommodation and sanitary facilities.
