Almost a third of Swiss people have already had a dispute with neighbors

According to a survey, almost one in three people in Switzerland have had a dispute with neighbors. The most common reasons were noise pollution, laundry problems, non-compliance with parking regulations and property disputes.
43 percent of those surveyed sought to talk to their neighbors about the neighborhood conflict, 24 percent were quietly annoyed and 22 percent contacted the property management company. 7 percent called the police, according to the survey published on Tuesday by the Zurich-based Marketagent Institute.
Over a third of those surveyed who had already argued with neighbors found this stressful. The majority of respondents (80 percent) blamed the neighbors for the dispute.
In addition to disturbances of the peace, non-compliance with the laundry schedule or a dirty laundry room was often the bone of contention. However, parking behavior and disputes regarding the property boundary, for example over fencing or planting, also often led to conflicts. Many disputes also started because communal areas such as the stairwell were used to store personal belongings.
Overall, two thirds or 68% of respondents stated that they had at least a fairly good relationship with their neighbors. A good one in five reported a very good relationship. In the survey, only 6% described their relationship with their neighbors as poor.
The survey included a good 1047 respondents aged between 14 and 74 from German-speaking and French-speaking Switzerland. It was conducted between April 2 and 14. The margin of error was 3.2 percentage points.
