Eight F/A-18 fighter jets are expected to take off during the military exercise on the A1 highway between Avenches and Payerne in the canton of Vaud. The highway section will be closed for a maximum of 36 hours, the Swiss Air Force announced on Thursday.
The closure is planned from Tuesday, June 4 at 9 pm until Thursday, June 6 at 9 am. A large area of the training ground will be cordoned off for the military exercise. This is not a public event. Planning is being carried out with the Federal Roads Office (Astra) and the cantonal police forces of Vaud and Fribourg, the statement continued.
The air force is using the exercise to test decentralization as a passive air defence measure. The aim is to distribute troops and material throughout the country in the shortest possible time. The test is necessary because the air force's resources are concentrated at its three military airfields in Payerne, Meiringen BE and Emmen LU. This makes them vulnerable, the air force wrote.
The last landing on a highway by Swiss Army fighter jets took place in Ticino in 1991.
