The Swiss start-up Climeworks has introduced a new generation of its CO2 capture technology. This is designed to increase capacity and save costs.
The third generation of direct air capture technology is based on new filter materials and cube-shaped modules, the company announced on Tuesday. These have been developed and tested over the last five years.
According to co-founder and co-CEO Jan Wurzbacher, this could enable the start-up to achieve capture capacities in the megaton range. Generation 3 doubles the CO2 capture capacity per module and halves the energy consumption. It also lasts longer and is half as expensive.
This represents "an important milestone" in the company's cost-cutting strategy. Climeworks aims to reduce the cost per captured ton of CO2 to between 250 and 350 US dollars by 2030. The total costs are to fall to between 400 and 600 US dollars per tonne. This corresponds to a reduction of up to 50 percent compared to the current level.
The new technology is now to be launched in Louisiana in the USA. Climeworks is planning a project there that is being funded by the US Department of Energy. Construction work is due to start in 2026.
