Switzerland is represented by two companies in a new list of around 100 promising start-ups in the tech industry. The start-ups Depoly and Swissto12 represent the Swiss Confederation in the illustrious rating published by the World Economic Forum (WEF) Foundation on Thursday.
By contrast, the USA takes the top spot on the list by a wide margin, followed by China and India and Germany as the first country from Europe. More than 35 companies are listed from the USA, eleven from China, ten from India and seven from Germany. In total, the companies come from 23 countries, including Israel, Brazil, Kenya and Egypt. A third of them are run by women, according to the report.
The two Swiss companies Depoly and Swissto12 have their headquarters in Sion and Renens respectively - and are therefore both located in French-speaking Switzerland. The seven German companies are: Constellr from Freiburg im Breisgau, Hellobetter from Hamburg, Made of Air from Berlin and from Munich Marvel Fusion, Proxima Fusion and Unio Enterprise as well as Plan QC from Garching near Munich.
Many of the companies are involved in the application of artificial intelligence to solve problems in the fields of energy, health, biotechnology, space and neurotechnology, the WEF reported. It selects the start-ups and networks them with leading figures from politics, business and culture to help solve problems facing humanity and the planet.
"They are at the forefront of innovation, driving the digital world and shaping the global trends of tomorrow," said the WEF. "These innovators are using the most advanced technologies to drive the radical changes needed to tackle the world's most pressing challenges," the WEF quoted Verena Kuhn, the responsible department head, as saying.
