The No to the cost brake initiative is good news for the Swiss healthcare system. The Conference of Cantonal Health Directors wrote this on Sunday. The referendum would have undermined federalism, as healthcare is a cantonal matter.
The cantons are responsible for providing the population with up-to-date care. The initiative would have jeopardized this, as it ignored the justified part of cost growth due to ageing and progress.
The indirect counter-proposal, which is now coming into effect, is expected to have a cost-reducing effect, the GDK continued. It would introduce targets for maximum growth in compulsory health insurance. In contrast to the initiative, the counter-proposal takes into account the understandable reasons for cost growth.
