Switzerland is tightening its regulations on marriages of minors. Among other things, so-called summer vacation marriages will generally be invalid in future. On Wednesday, the National Council resolved the last differences with the Council of States on the bill.
The only controversial issue between the councils was an exception. This concerns cases in which one spouse is still a minor at the time of the examination of a marriage.
The Council of States and the Federal Council had spoken out in favor of maintaining a marriage in such cases if a judge deems it necessary to maintain the marriage in the interests of the person concerned and for their protection.
The National Council originally wanted to delete this exemption provision, i.e. not allow any exceptions, but agreed with the Council of States on Wednesday. The matter will now go to the final votes of both chambers.
