The storms have caused more damage than expected on the Matterhorn-Gotthard Railway line in Valais between Täsch and Zermatt. The railroad is not expected to be able to resume operations for several weeks.

The Matterhorn-Gotthard Railway (MGBahn) announced on Tuesday that further damage had been detected after the Vispa river level dropped. The damage affects the Kalpetran-Herbriggen section in particular.

According to current estimates, the repair work will take several weeks, according to MGBahn. The Visp-Täsch line will therefore remain closed to rail traffic until further notice. The rail replacement by bus will continue until then. Zermatt can still be reached by land with the shuttle train from Täsch.

There may be longer waiting times during the train interruption. Travelers are strongly advised to plan additional time buffers, as the replacement capacities by bus are lower than for regular rail services. Groups can also only be transported to a limited extent.

The Gornergrat Bahn (GGB) will remain closed until at least the end of Wednesday until the Riffelbord protective gallery, which was damaged by a debris flow, has been repaired.
