In order to keep traffic congestion on the A2 highway at the Gotthard under control, the Federal Roads Office (Astra) wants to make rapid progress with the storm-related clearance work on the Simplon route and in Misox. The closure of the A13 in the southern Graubünden valley and that of the Simplon Pass have led to even more traffic in the Gotthard road tunnel.

The heavy rainfall last weekend led to debris flows on the Simplon Pass in Valais, according to a statement from Astra on Monday. The clearing work began on Sunday. In order to make the Engi gallery more resistant, additional wooden supports were installed as an immediate measure.

Once the clearing work has been completed, probably on Friday, the safe use of the road will be examined. Until then, the road between the top of the pass and Simplon-Dorf will remain closed in both directions. The stretch between Brig-Ried and the top of the pass and between Simplon-Dorf and Gondo is open to traffic.

According to Astra, the A9 highway between Lausanne and Brig VS, which was flooded in places by the high waters of the Rhone at the weekend, will be fully reopened by Monday evening.

According to Astra, last weekend's storms had little impact on the repair work on the A13 between Lostallo and Mesocco in the Misox region of Graubünden. The opening of the A13 with one lane in each direction next Friday is still realistic. According to the current status, the road could then be opened to traffic at 5 o'clock.
