Switzerland is the most innovative country in Europe. This was revealed in a report on innovation by the European Commission. South Korea leads the global rankings.

Compared to the 27 countries of the European Union (EU) and eleven other European countries, Switzerland is the most innovative, according to the European Commission's "European Innovation Scoreboard 2024" report published on Monday. It was followed by Denmark, Sweden, Finland and the Netherlands, which, like Switzerland, were among the "innovation leaders".

According to the report, Switzerland achieved the highest score for the indicator of an attractive research location. Compared to other countries, Switzerland has a large proportion of foreign doctoral students. According to the report, researchers in Switzerland cooperate more frequently with international partners.

Switzerland performs poorly in the environment sector

One weakness is the comparatively weak government support for research and development in companies. Switzerland also scored lower than other countries for technologies related to the environment.

Looking ahead to 2023, innovation performance increased in 15 of the 27 EU member states, according to a statement accompanying the report. Performance fell in eleven countries and stagnated in one.

In the group of innovation leaders, the four EU member states recorded strong growth in the period from 2017 to 2024. During this period, growth in Switzerland was moderate, but from a higher base, according to the report.
