The two Valais municipalities of Goms and Val de Bagnes have asked the army for further support in clearing up after the storms. Military disaster relief in Valais will be discontinued in the course of Wednesday.
Initial contacts have been made between the army and the municipalities, said Jean-Claude Gagliardi, head of operations for the army, to the Keystone-SDA news agency on Wednesday. "We will examine the feasibility of this support. If the applications are successful, the duration of the operation will be discussed with the applicants."
As planned, the Swiss Armed Forces will end their disaster relief mission on Wednesday. The troops will return the equipment to the army's logistics base. A total of 157 members of the army have been deployed throughout the canton since the beginning of last week, mainly in Saas-Grund, Goms and Val d'Anniviers to clear debris.
The Valais was hit by severe storms the weekend before last and requested the help of the Swiss army.
