There are to be temporary border controls at the German border with France from Saturday. Due to the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) has ordered internal border controls at the German land border and on air traffic to France and has also announced this at EU level. The measures are to apply from July 20 to September 30, according to a ministry spokesperson.

"In close cooperation with the French authorities, we want to ensure the highest level of security," the statement said. The German steps are intended to flank France's security measures. They are closely coordinated.

Tighter border controls due to European Championships end

These ad hoc checks are necessary in order to identify potential criminals and threats operating across borders at an early stage and to take the necessary border police measures. According to the Ministry of the Interior, however, they should not be carried out across the board, but "depending on the situation, risk-based and as targeted as possible". The impact on the border regions, their residents, cross-border commuters, the economy and trade should be kept as low as possible, emphasized the Ministry of the Interior.

This Friday, the temporary controls at all German internal borders ordered for the European Football Championship will end. At the internal Schengen borders with Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, there will be border searches with targeted checks in the border regions from Saturday instead of border controls. Checks will continue to be carried out at the land borders with Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland, as they have been for some time. The aim here is to limit irregular migration and combat people smuggling. They will remain in place until December 15 for Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland and until November 11 for Austria.
