In the canton of Vaud, a prisoner took advantage of the open penal system to escape on Thursday afternoon. The man is not believed to pose a danger to the public, as the Vaudois police assured. Nevertheless, a feverish search was launched for the Swiss man.
According to the police, the man was working outside the secured area on the agricultural estate of the prison in Orbe VD. At around 11 a.m., the inmate escaped from the supervision of the prison staff and fled on foot, according to a statement issued by the Vaud cantonal police on Thursday. At the time, the man was wearing the orange uniform worn by inmates in open prison.
The police launched a manhunt for the man, but at the same time assured the public that the Swiss fugitive posed no threat to public safety. According to the police, the man was in custody serving a sentence for property offenses and fines. He was not due to be released for another two months.
