The Greens have declared war on the possible construction of new nuclear power plants in Switzerland. "Nuclear power has no future, our future is renewable energies," said party president Lisa Mazzone at the party meeting in Basel on Saturday.
"We are ready for another referendum, Mr. Rösti, to fight new nuclear power plants in Switzerland," she said. "We are ready for the referendum. And we will win it."
The Swiss electorate decided seven years ago to phase out nuclear power and no new nuclear power plants may be built. However, a popular initiative submitted in February entitled "Anytime electricity for everyone (stop the blackout)" calls for the ban on the construction of nuclear power plants to be lifted from the law.
The Federal Council has not yet taken a position on this. The media recently reported that Energy Minister Albert Rösti wants to allow the construction of new nuclear power plants again with a possible counter-proposal. Rösti said in parliament in June that he was personally open to considering all technologies. "We should not play the technologies off against each other."
