Schaffhausen voters will elect the new cantonal government today, Sunday. Four of the five incumbents are standing for re-election. There is likely to be a duel between the SP candidate and the FDP candidate for the seat vacated by Walter Vogelsanger (SP).

With Marcel Montanari, the FDP wants to win back the second seat on the cantonal council that it lost to the SP in the 2020 elections. The 38-year-old lawyer Montanari works as a lawyer and university lecturer and has been a member of the cantonal council since 2013.

The SP is sending Bettina Looser into the race to defend her second seat in government. The 54-year-old former teacher and journalist has been Managing Director of the Federal Migration Commission since 2021 and also works as a university lecturer. She is a member of the cantonal education council.

The GLP is running with 39-year-old Daniel Spitz. The Head of the Sports Office of the Canton of Schaffhausen has been a member of the Schaffhausen City Parliament since 2021.

The four current members of the cantonal government are considered uncontroversial and therefore have a good chance of being re-elected. They are Martin Kessler (FDP), Cornelia Stamm Hurter (SVP), Patrick Strasser (SP) and Dino Tamagni (SVP). Should a second ballot be necessary, this would take place together with the cantonal council elections on September 22.
