The popular initiative by opponents of the government's coronavirus measures has failed. By Wednesday, 52,312 signatures had been collected, as the Friends of the Constitution announced on Wednesday. A total of 100,000 signatures would have been required.
Instead of the "reappraisal initiative", the initiators' concern - action against state coronavirus measures - is to be addressed to the Federal Council as a petition, according to the press release. The collection period would expire on August 28. The petition is now to be handed over on this date.
At the same time, they want to ask parliamentarians to use this petition as a basis "for further political steps, such as submitting a parliamentary initiative for an independent and extra-parliamentary investigation".
According to the popular initiative, government measures such as compulsory masks and forced closures to combat the Covid pandemic should have been investigated by a special court, among other things. In addition, an "extra-parliamentary Swiss commission of inquiry" should have been set up to investigate the background to the pandemic.
The popular initiative entitled "Reappraisal of the background to the Covid-19 pandemic (reappraisal initiative)" would have been the "largest democracy project" in Switzerland, as the initiators write on the website.
