On Friday, the Basel Criminal Court has to decide on an application for custody of a 28-year-old man. In 2017, he stabbed a homeless man to death in a Basel park in a religious frenzy.
In 2018, the criminal court acquitted the young Brazilian of the charge of murder on the grounds of insanity. It ordered inpatient psychiatric treatment for the man, who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, and issued a five-year ban from the country.
However, according to the expert, he has still not distanced himself from religious megalomania, according to the application submitted by the penitentiary system. As a result, further serious acts of violence involving the use of weapons and against random victims are to be expected. Imprisonment "for the protection of the public" is therefore justified, it continues.
The homicide a few days before Christmas 2017 made waves in Basel. The perpetrator stabbed a 60-year-old homeless man known in the neighborhood to death with a knife in the Dreirosenanlage. At the time, the accused explained that his victim had not let him convert him to Christianity, claiming that he had carried out the crime on behalf of God.
