A Finnish energy supplier wants to generate climate-friendly district heating in Helsinki and has ordered the world's largest plant from German engineering company MAN Energy Solutions. Zurich is also pleased about this.

The Finnish energy company Helen Oy wants to supply around 30,000 households in Helsinki with district heating using an air-to-water heat pump from MAN. This should save 26,000 tons of CO2 per year.

According to mechanical engineering company MAN from Augsburg, the system can use ambient air at temperatures as low as -20 Celsius as an energy source to heat water for the district heating network. Depending on the air temperature, it has a capacity of 20 to 33 megawatts.

The compressor, the heart of the heat pump, is manufactured in Zurich, where MAN Energy Solutions employs 800 people. The Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs is subsidizing the project. The plant is scheduled to go into operation in fall 2026.
