Complaint against Telebasel’s contribution upheld

With a news report about the Baselland cantonal hospital, the regional television station Telebasel has violated the ban on factual accuracy. This is the finding of the Independent Complaints Authority for Radio and Television (UBI).
As it announced on Friday, the licensed regional television station broadcast a two-part report lasting just over six minutes in December 2023 about allegations made by employees of Baselland Cantonal Hospital (KSBL) against the hospital management.
KSBL lodged a complaint because, according to the UBI, the broadcast claimed that the Executive Board and Board of Directors had paid themselves 6.8 percent more in compensation in 2022 without justification.
In a controversial discussion, the majority of UBI members were of the opinion that this was a serious accusation, according to the press release. For this reason, those affected should have had their say in the report with their best arguments.
However, the point of view of the challenged hospital had not been expressed in the broadcast, which is why the requirement of fairness had been violated. The UBI upheld the hospital management's complaint by five votes to three.
Over the course of two days of public deliberations, the UBI discussed ten cases in Sarnen OW and reached a total of 34 decisions on the approval or rejection of complaints. For example, a complaint against a report by the French-speaking Swiss television station RTS about the sexual abuse of minors by clergymen in the monastery of Saint-Maurice VS was rejected.
