SBB has to renovate the platform roofs at 200 smaller stations throughout Switzerland ahead of schedule. This is due to construction defects during building 20 years ago. The costs amount to 70 million francs.
The roofs built at the time had no or too small a gradient, SBB announced on Wednesday at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. This was first reported by the "Schweizer Eisenbahn-Revue" and several online portals. The standing water then caused damage to the roofs.
These would now be replaced by platform roofs with a minimum gradient. The steel structures will be retained. SBB is attempting to coordinate the renovation work with the expansion projects in connection with the implementation of the Disability Discrimination Act.
The costs of CHF 70 million would be spread over the years from 2020 to 2029. This also includes the maintenance of the roofs.
Due to the deficiencies, SBB had also adapted the guidelines for platform roofs. They must now have a minimum gradient in the longitudinal and transverse directions. The seals have also been improved to ensure that the platform roofs achieve the required service life in future.
