The SP regrets the "no" to the biodiversity initiative in Sunday's vote. Major public investment is needed to counter species extinction and climate change. The FDP was satisfied with the result and relies on the personal responsibility of all stakeholders.

The biodiversity initiative would have made important progress in the protection of plant and animal species possible, SP regretted in a communiqué. "We are facing the challenge that biodiversity is decreasing year after year and extreme weather events are increasing," SP Co-President and National Councillor Cédric Wermuth (AG) was quoted as saying. This requires the climate fund initiative launched jointly with the Greens with the ecological conversion of Switzerland towards renewable energies.

The Protestant People's Party wrote that Switzerland is particularly affected by the extinction of species, which is a proven fact. This poses a serious threat to the basis of life. This threat is not under control. Despite this, the Federal Council and the bourgeois parliamentary majority were convinced by the argument that the existing legal basis was sufficient. Now they have to prove the facts.

FDP: Quality instead of quantity

The FDP, on the other hand, was pleased with the rejection of the "extreme" initiative. The electorate had seen through the issue. Biodiversity was also a concern for the FDP. However, the initiative would have missed the target. It would have prevented the development of mountain areas and made building more expensive. The preservation of biodiversity must be based on quality rather than quantity. The party also trusts in the personal responsibility of those involved.

The Swiss Trade Association wrote that acceptance would have been detrimental to trade. It would have severely restricted sustainable energy and food production, made the use of forests and tourist infrastructure in rural areas more difficult and delayed and increased the cost of construction projects.

The Swiss Water Management Association was also pleased. The initiative would have greatly hindered the expansion of renewable energies and hydropower in particular. With "countless voluntary renaturation projects", the hydropower industry has also been committed to enhancing habitats for over 20 years.
