For the non-partisan women's umbrella organization Alliance F, Switzerland has missed a "historic opportunity" by voting no to the BVG reform: the opportunity to improve the pension situation of many women in the country. The association therefore regrets the referendum decision.
Around 275,000 women would have received a higher pension from the second pillar as a result of the reform or would have been newly insured, the association wrote in a press release on Sunday. This is because the proposal would have lowered the entry threshold and improved the coordination deduction.
This puts Switzerland back in first place in the efforts to improve pension provision for women. Women's pensions from the 2nd pillar are on average 44 percent lower than those of men. Alliance F refers to this difference as the "pension gap".
It is now important to work constructively on solutions to improve the economic situation of women in the country. Low earners and part-time employees must be better protected in occupational pension schemes in order to tackle the problem of the pension gap. There also needs to be "finally better framework conditions for the compatibility of family and career."
