Blick" comments on the rejection of the biodiversity initiative as follows:

"The biodiversity initiative is one of a long list of referendums that the Swiss have rejected. The no vote is understandable. The initiative was too broad, its concrete effects too unclear. Mixing up homeland and nature conservation was a knock-out combo.

But even if the environmental associations' initiative is not the solution, continuing as before is not an option in this case either. Switzerland's biodiversity is not in good shape. Biodiversity is 'still in a poor state and continues to decline', the Federal Office for the Environment states on its website. (. . .)

The voters' No to the Biodiversity Initiative therefore does not release Environment Minister Albert Rösti and Parliament from their duty to act. The farmers' lobby is now also called upon. They have repeatedly claimed in recent weeks that we do not need more protected areas, but that we need to upgrade the existing ones. We take them at their word. Now it's time to put the promise into practice."
