Two days before the announcement of health insurance premiums for 2025, Caritas has made demands. The cantons must grant higher premium reductions, writes the aid organization. And the Federal Council must ensure that the counter-proposal is implemented as quickly as possible following the "no" to the premium reduction initiative.
The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) will announce the 2025 premiums on Thursday. However, according to Caritas, it is already clear that households with low incomes will come under even greater pressure. The situation is becoming increasingly precarious for those affected. "In the social counseling sessions at Caritas, we have more inquiries than ever before," Peter Lack, Director of Caritas Switzerland, was quoted as saying in the press release on Tuesday.
Both the cantons and the federal government are therefore called upon to act. The aid organization demands that the cantons counter the cost increases with higher premium reductions. This expenditure should be taken into account in the cantonal budgets for the coming year. The federal government, for its part, must implement the indirect counter-proposal as quickly as possible following the "no" to the premium reduction initiative in June.
