The delegates of the SVP Switzerland are unanimous in their support for the two tenancy law proposals. At the delegates' meeting in Aarau on Saturday, they voted almost unanimously in favor of subletting and termination for personal use.

The resolution to amend the Code of Obligations for subletting was passed with 361 votes in favor (no votes against, three abstentions). The "yes" vote on the amendment to the owner-occupier requirement was passed with 356 votes in favor (no votes against, one abstention).

National Councillor Gregor Rutz (ZH), President of the Swiss Homeowners Association, said as a pro-speaker that the two amendments affect a small proportion of tenancies. It was about fair rules. Tenant protection remains intact. The opponents of the proposals wanted to gradually nationalize the real estate market.

Michael Töngi, Lucerne National Councillor for the Greens and Vice President of the Swiss Tenants' Association, tried to convince the delegates to vote against. Both proposals sought to weaken protection against dismissal. Töngi spoke of an attack on tenant protection. The real estate lobby wanted to weaken tenancy law.

Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin previously stated that the housing market had lost its balance. Housing construction had not kept pace with demand. On the demand side, immigration and the reduction in household size played an important role.

Parmelin noted that the two tenancy law proposals were the result of parliamentary initiatives. The Federal Council was originally of the opinion that the existing rules were sufficient. The Federal Council is recommending that both bills be adopted. The referendum will take place on November 24.
