Cantons allocate more money from lottery funds in 2023

Last year, the cantons spent and paid out around 609 million Swiss francs from the distributions of the lottery companies Swisslos and Loterie Romande for charitable purposes. This was around 80 million more than in the previous year, according to the report published on Tuesday by the intercantonal gambling supervisory authority.

The cantons' expenditure in the 2023 reporting year was again lower than the distributions of the two lottery companies. The latter amounted to around CHF 664.4 million according to the cantons, as reported by the Intercantonal Gambling Supervisory Authority (Gespa). Additional reserves have therefore been formed. These amounted to around 1.25 billion francs across all cantons, according to the Gespa report.

There were also significant differences between the cantons with regard to the utilization of the allocated funds. Assets increased in 47 of the 82 funds reported. It decreased for 31 funds and remained unchanged for 4 funds.

The cantons spent the most money on culture, with a total of CHF 248.5 million. Sport came in second place with CHF 146.4 million. This was followed by cultural assets worthy of protection, social welfare, environmental and development aid as well as education and research.

Meanwhile, the cantons spent a total of CHF 13.2 million on fund administration costs - which corresponded to 2% of total expenditure.
