A consortium has submitted the concession application for a new Pradapunt hydropower plant to the municipality of Arosa. The consortium includes Axpo, Arosa Energie and IBC Energie Wasser Chur. They want to invest around 80 million francs.
The new power plant could supply around 10,000 households with clean energy, according to a press release issued by the consortium on Wednesday. The gradient of the Plessur in Schanfigg between Litzirüti and Molinis will be used for this purpose. It is expected to produce 42 gigawatt hours of electricity per year.
Planning has been underway since 2014, but the project was suspended in 2017 due to the lack of economic prospects. As the general conditions have since improved, the consortium became active again in 2023.
The submission of the concession application marks the start of a two-stage approval process that will take several years. The consortium expects an investment and construction decision to be made in 2027 at the earliest. After a three-year construction period, electricity production could start in 2031.
First the Arosa municipal council and then the municipal parliament will decide on the application. This will be followed by a referendum. The procedure with the cantonal authorities will then begin.
