In view of the economic slump in Europe's largest economy, the German Liberals believe that "directional decisions" in the coalition are possible in the coming weeks.
FDP parliamentary group leader Christian Dürr said this after a meeting with business associations in Berlin. "We want to catch up with the major industrialized nations again." Germany should play in the Champions League again.
German Finance Minister and FDP leader Christian Lindner, when asked whether the coalition would soon be holding joint consultations, said that he regularly met with Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens). Such meetings would also take place again in the near future.
In response to a question about the continuation of the coalition, Lindner said: "There is also something like a government commitment and it is always better for Germany if a government finds a common direction, describes it and implements it."
The economic policy discussion is now where it belongs, namely at the top of the agenda, said Lindner: "It is clear that we will have to find a common position in the coming weeks, if only because of the timetable for the 2025 federal budget."
In the afternoon, Chancellor Scholz will meet with industry representatives. The fact that two such events are taking place almost simultaneously and independently of each other is often seen in Germany as a sign that the coalition partners SPD, FDP and Greens are drifting apart.
