A lot of unsold food is thrown away in the retail trade. The Federal Council wants to counter this by increasing food donations. Some companies are already doing this by freezing fish and meat before the use-by date and donating it to charitable organizations.

However, there is room for improvement, as the national government states in a report adopted on Wednesday. Some retailers are already implementing the corresponding recommendation of the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO) across the board by freezing and passing on their products.

At present, however, only a small proportion of food losses are reduced in the form of donations, the report continued. Retailers could improve the situation on a voluntary basis, for example through contracts with the relevant organizations. These organizations are dependent on planning security so that they can redistribute food efficiently.

In Switzerland, around 330 kilos of avoidable food waste is generated per person per year across the entire value chain. Reducing this would save money and conserve resources.

The Federal Council adopted an action plan in April 2022. The aim is to halve the losses by 2025. The national government will then present an interim report and examine whether further measures are necessary.
